The 6-team Island Junior Hockey League gets its 2012-13 campaign started on Friday night in Montague when the Maniacs return to the league after a year of absence to host the Arsenault's Fish Mart Red Wings at 7:30 at the Montague Wellness Centre. The Maniacs took a year leave of absence from the league last season after finishing runners up at the 2011 Don Johnson Cup.
The Red Wings will be lead by veteran and team captain, TJ Campbell, steady, hard-working Jeremy Balderston, and defenseman, Ben Johnson. In goal, Chris Gallant will handle most of the minutes. Red Wings coaching staff, also expect Tyler Leblanc, and Tayler Albert to play some key roles. Former player, Jackie Ray Bernard, will join the coaching staff this season.
On the weekend, the expansion Holland College Junior Hurricanes will host two games at the Charlottetown Civic Centre, first welcoming the League Champion Kensington Moase Plumbing & Heating Vipers on Saturday night at 7:30 and the Maniacs on Sunday afternoon at 3:20. The Hurricanes' young squad has been preparing hard through the pre-season. The team will rely on defencemen Eric Locke and Brandon Barrett to patrol things in their own end while forwards John Livingston, Pat LeFrank, Blake Ozon and Jonny Richards will be called upon to lead the team offensively.
On Tuesday night the Charlottetown Abbies and Sherwood A&S Scrap Metal Falcons will get their seasons underway when they meet at Simmons at 8 o'clock. The Falcons will host the Red Wings the following night at 8 o'clock at the Cody Banks Arena.
