Local businessman Robert Arsenault, who owns Arsenault Fish Mart, has purchased the Western Red Wings from Hal Schurman and Stacy Silliker. After spending the past three years playing out of the Tyne Valley Community Sports Centre, the Red Wings will move to the new Evangeline Recreation Centre for the 2011-12 season. The team will be known as the Arsenault Fish Mart Red Wings.

"The reason I bought the team is because of our local rink," said Arsenault.

J.C. Gallant has been named team manager. The Red Wings will focus on attracting players aged 17-to-21-years-old from Summerside west.

"I was involved with junior B when it was here (Abram-Village) before (with the Loggers)," said Gallant. "We are getting a well-established team."

Under construction

The new Evangeline Recreation Centre is currently under construction, and is scheduled to open in the fall. The Red Wings are still working on finalizing a regular night for home games.

"It's going to be big (for the rink)," said arena manager Cedric Gallant. "First off, you get a couple of extra ice times per week, and if we can put 200 or 300 people in the rink (each game), it will be big for the canteen and the rink."
The Red Wings are coming off a fifth-place finish in the regular season. They then swept the fourth-place Charlottetown Metro Building Supplies Abbies in the best-of-five quarter-final series, and lost a five-game semifinal series to the eventual league and Don Johnson Cup Atlantic junior B hockey champions, Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers.

Time to move on

Schurman and Silliker, who also handled the coaching duties, both feel it is time to move on. Schurman has been involved with the franchise for the last 13 years, and Silliker has eight years of service.

"It's time to let someone else take the reins and run with it," said Schurman. "The biggest thing about this league, and a team of this calibre, is you have to have a lot of people who can help."

"I think with this community, and it's a pretty close community, you will get a lot of help."
